The Standard for
Deep-Bed Filtration

Anthracite Filter Media is a specialized water treatment carbon sourced from selected hard coal with high carbon content (80-95%). Unlike activated carbon used for adsorption, anthracite is a physical filtration media designed for depth-bed filtration.

As direct manufacturers and exporters, our anthracite is meticulously screened to provide a low uniformity coefficient and high mechanical strength. Its angular shape and low density allow it to remain at the top of a multi-media filter (above sand), capturing the bulk of suspended solids and preventing deeper filter clogging.

Designed for
Extreme Filtration Efficiency

Superior Solids Capture

The angular grain surface area provides more contact points than rounded sand, trapping significantly more floc in dual-media systems.

Rapid Backwash Recovery

Lower density (1.4-1.6 g/cc) allows the media to expand and clean at lower backwash velocities, reducing operational energy costs.

Acid/Alkali Resistance

High-purity carbon profile ensures the media does not leach minerals into the product water under varying pH conditions.

Global Manufacturing Partnership

Smart Well Fluid delivers bulk coal-based solutions to power plants and municipal utilities across 40+ countries.

Global Application Use Cases

Municipal Drinking Water

High-performance turbidity removal in large-scale tap water plants.

Pre-Treatment (RO)

Protecting Reverse Osmosis membranes by capturing particulates beforehand.

Industrial Process Water

Secondary circuit filtration for cooling towers and refinery utilities.

Wastewater Tertiary

Polishing effluent before environmental discharge or recycling.

Technical Guidance

Not sure about the effective size (ES) or uniformity coefficient (UC) for your filter bed? Our technical team is ready to assist.

Anthracite has a lower density (1.4-1.6 g/cc) than sand (2.6 g/cc). During backwashing, the media fluidizes and settles back into layers based on density. This allows the coarser anthracite to sit on top, capturing larger particles first and leaving the finer sand below for final polishing.

Most municipal and industrial projects require a UC of 1.4 or lower. A lower UC means the grains are more uniform, leading to more predictable pressure drops and better backwash performance. Our premium anthracite is screened to meet these strict thresholds.

No. While it is a carbon media, filter-grade anthracite is NOT activated. It provides physical filtration for solids and turbidity. For chlorine or organic removal, you would require Activated Carbon.

India’s Strategic Source for Premium Anthracite Filter Media

Anthracite filter media continues to be the pillar of industrial and municipal filtration systems globally. Its unique ability to facilitate deep-bed filtration—where solids are trapped throughout the entire depth of the media bed rather than just on the surface—doubles the run-times of traditional sand filters and reduces backwash water consumption by up to 50%.

Smart Well Fluid operates as a direct manufacturer and global exporter of high-grade anthracite from India. Our commitment to strict screening protocols and high carbon purity (85-95%) ensures that our media does not degrade over years of service. With prioritized shipping to major ports worldwide, we provide mechanical and technical security for massive utilities and desalination pretreatment projects from Mumbai to the Middle East and beyond.
